Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Arribada — Gahirmatha Beach
One of the world's largest mass sea turtle nestings: hundreds of thousands of Olive Ridley turtles converge on a single Indian beach in a breathtaking nocturnal spectacle.
About this spectacle
Gahirmatha Beach on India's Odisha coast hosts one of the most dramatic wildlife events on Earth: the Olive Ridley sea turtle arribada, where hundreds of thousands of female turtles haul ashore simultaneously to nest. Standing on the darkened beach as wave after wave of turtles emerges from the surf — their shells glistening, flippers churning sand — is an almost overwhelming spectacle of ancient instinct. The air fills with the shuffle and scrape of nesting activity, the smell of the sea, and the soft chorus of thousands of bodies moving across the sand. Each turtle digs a nest, deposits eggs, and retreats to the ocean over the course of a few hours. Witnessing this mass synchronised nesting, one of the largest such gatherings of sea turtles in the world, leaves visitors with a profound sense of scale and biological wonder. The event is concentrated and intense, typically unfolding over a few nights.
