The Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana) of Israel's Negev Desert reaches its highest population density in the Makhtesh Ramon — the world's largest erosion crater at 40 kilometres long — where the cliff-face goats navigate vertical drops of 100+ metres with a casual athleticism that makes human rock climbers appear clumsy by comparison. Watch a large male, his curved horns sweeping back nearly a metre, pick his way along a ledge barely wider than his hoof, then leap without hesitation across a gap with a 100-metre drop below. In October and November, dominant males spar and posture, horns clattering in the pre-rut drama. The crater floor stretches 40 kilometres of colour-banded geological strata — reds, yellows, and creams — while the ibex move through it as if the vertical dimension is simply another floor plan. Near Mitzpe Ramon's campgrounds, animals arrive calmly to lick mineral salts, allowing photographers to work at conversation distance. Dawn light rakes across the crater walls and catches the horns of grazing males against sky — a composition that requires almost no effort to find.
