Nohner Wasserfall — Eifel

The Nohner Wasserfall is one of the highest freely accessible natural waterfalls in the Eifel, where the Nohner Bach plunges over a basalt ledge in a wooded gorge near Nohn creating a scene of quiet and mossy drama entirely unlike the tourist-heavy Rhine valley a few hours to the east. The waterfall runs strongest from November through April when winter rains fill the upland streams, and in hard winters dramatic ice formations build around the cascade's edges — curtains of translucent green ice draping the basalt walls. The surrounding gorge is ancient and undisturbed, with old-growth beech canopy closing overhead and the sound of the water audible long before the falls come into view on the short trail from the village. In early spring the gorge floor is carpeted with wild garlic and wood anemones, and dippers nest in the spray zone of the fall itself. The combination of volcanic geology, clear cold water, and near-total isolation from other visitors makes this one of the Eifel's most rewarding short walks.

About this spectacle

The Nohner Wasserfall drops over a dark basalt ledge deep inside a wooded gorge near the village of Nohn in the Rhineland-Palatinate Eifel. The sound of the water carries through the beech trees well before you see it, building anticipation on the short walk from the trailhead. In peak flow — November through April — the full force of the Nohner Bach fills the gorge with spray and noise, and in cold winters translucent curtains of green-tinted ice cling to the basalt walls, framing the cascade in sculpted frost. Spring brings a different beauty: wild garlic and wood anemones blanket the gorge floor, and dippers dart through the mist around the waterfall's base. The old-growth canopy closes overhead, creating an enclosed, moss-cushioned atmosphere very unlike the open Rhine valley nearby. At most times you will have this place largely to yourself — a rare stillness for a waterfall this dramatic. Bring waterproof boots: the trail is short but the spray zone is real.
