Nohkalikai Falls — Meghalaya India

Nohkalikai Falls near Cherrapunji in Meghalaya — India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres, plunging into a pool of extraordinary blue-green colour (the colour produced by the mineral content of the Meghalayan rainforest's water, distinct from the grey of glacial falls or the brown of jungle falls), in the world's wettest region (Cherrapunji holds the record for highest annual rainfall at 11,777 mm) — is at its most powerful during the monsoon season (June through September) when the plateau's full rainfall concentrates into the waterfall. The name's origin ('the leap of Ka Likai', a tragic Khasi woman's story embedded in the falls' mythology) and the Khasi community's oral tradition create a cultural layer of considerable depth. The viewpoint above Cherrapunji's escarpment simultaneously reveals the falls' full 340-metre drop, the Bangladesh plains 1,400 metres below in the distance, and the living root bridges of the Khasi's engineering tradition, creating Meghalaya's most layered single viewpoint experience.

About this spectacle

Standing at the viewpoint above Cherrapunji's dramatic escarpment, visitors watch Nohkalikai Falls plunge an uninterrupted 340 metres into a luminous blue-green pool — a colour so distinct it reads almost unreal against the dark basalt walls. The roar builds before the falls come into view, and the sheer volume of water during the monsoon (June to September) creates a constant mist that cools the air and coats nearby vegetation. The panorama is layered: the full vertical drop of India's tallest plunge waterfall in the foreground, the vast Bangladesh plains far below in the distance, and glimpses of the Khasi Hills' living root bridges threading through forest. Outside the monsoon the flow narrows considerably, but the blue-green pool retains its extraordinary colour year-round, fed by mineral-rich Meghalayan rainforest water. Morning light catches the mist and illuminates the pool before haze builds over the plains. The escarpment viewpoint is accessible with minimal walking, making the drama available to most visitors within moments of arrival.
