Nigretta Falls — Australia
A dramatic basalt waterfall on the Wannon River in western Victoria, roaring to life after winter and spring rains.
About this spectacle
Nigretta Falls is a basalt waterfall tucked into the volcanic plains of western Victoria, where the Wannon River drops dramatically over a curved rock shelf into a pool below. Visitors encounter the raw sound of rushing water against dark stone, with mist rising on high-flow days. The surrounding landscape is characterised by open grassy woodland and scattered eucalypts. The falls are most spectacular after winter and spring rains, when the flow is at its peak. The setting is relatively undeveloped, giving a sense of quiet natural discovery rather than a manicured tourist experience. Birdlife is present along the riparian corridor, and the basalt shelf itself offers interesting textural detail for close-up photography.
