About this spectacle

New River Gorge carves a dramatic sandstone canyon through the Appalachian highlands of West Virginia, revealing layered cliff walls that drop hundreds of feet to the ancient New River below. Visitors standing at Grandview or Hawks Nest overlooks encounter sweeping vistas of dense mixed hardwood forest, its canopy blazing with autumn color in October. The gorge hosts the iconic New River Gorge Bridge — one of the longest steel arch bridges in the world — visible in full profile from below at Long Point Trail or from the Canyon Rim Visitor Center. Whitewater roar mingles with birdsong along the river corridor, and early morning mist often fills the canyon before burning off to reveal craggy ridgelines. Whether on a flat rim trail or scrambling toward cliff edges, the sense of scale is immediate and humbling. The gorge rewards photographers at dawn and dusk when low-angle light models the canyon walls and bridge silhouette.
