Mute Swan Wintering — Cheonan

About this spectacle

Each winter, thousands of whooper and tundra swans arrive at the shallow lakes, reservoirs, and flooded rice paddies around Cheonan in South Chungcheong Province. At dawn the birds are most active — lifting off in great white waves, calling loudly across still water, or drifting in dense rafts that turn the surface silver-white. The surrounding agricultural landscape provides foraging grounds between flights, and a purpose-built bird hide at the reservoir allows visitors to observe at close range without disturbing the birds. The air carries the bugling calls of whoopers and the softer, higher notes of tundra swans, punctuated by the rush of wings as flocks wheel overhead. On calm mornings, mirror-flat water doubles the spectacle in reflection. The scene is unhurried and intimate — this is not a dramatic migration flyby but a prolonged winter residency, with the birds present for weeks and returning reliably year after year.
