About this spectacle

Mutarazi Falls plunges dramatically from the edge of the Nyanga plateau in eastern Zimbabwe, dropping in two main stages into a deep, mist-filled gorge far below. Standing at the viewing point, visitors are confronted by a sheer wall of white water and the constant roar that resonates through the surrounding rainforest. The spray carries far, cooling the air and nourishing vivid mosses and ferns that cling to the basalt cliffs. The surrounding Nyanga National Park frames the falls with rolling montane grasslands and indigenous forest, and the descent into the gorge reveals a landscape transformed by perpetual moisture. Birdlife is rich in the canopy above the gorge, and the light in the late morning catches the mist in shifting rainbows. Access involves hiking through scenic highland terrain, rewarding those who make the effort with one of southern Africa's most spectacular free-falling waterfalls.
