Murnauer Moos
Largest near-natural Alpine foothill mire near Murnau; carnivorous plants.
About this spectacle
The Murnauer Moos stretches across a vast lowland basin south of Munich, presenting visitors with an otherworldly tapestry of bog pools, reed beds, and sedge meadows framed by the Bavarian Alps on the horizon. In spring and summer the mire comes alive with colour: sundews glisten with sticky droplets in the low light, butterworts spread purple flowers across wet limestone flushes, and cotton grass sways in the breeze. Dragonflies patrol the open water and white storks forage in the wet meadows. The air carries the faint scent of peat and wild herbs. Paths lead through a mosaic of habitats where fen gives way to raised bog, and silence is broken only by the calls of wading birds and the wind. The scale of the undisturbed landscape, so close to the Alps, makes it feel genuinely remote despite its accessibility.
