Muddy Creek Falls
Maryland's highest waterfall, plunging through a forested gorge in Swallow Falls State Park — a rewarding cascade for all seasons.
About this spectacle
Muddy Creek Falls is a waterfall located in the Allegheny Highlands region of western Maryland, near the West Virginia border. Visitors descend through a forested gorge to reach the falls, where the creek plunges over a sandstone ledge into a rocky pool below. The sound of rushing water fills the narrow canyon, and in wetter seasons the flow is impressively forceful. Surrounding deciduous and mixed forest provides a verdant canopy in spring and summer, brilliant foliage in autumn, and ice formations along the rock face in winter. The hike to the falls rewards with views of the cascading water framed by mossy boulders and overhanging trees. The site is within Swallow Falls State Park, a relatively accessible nature destination that draws day-trippers seeking a peaceful forest waterfall experience.
