About this spectacle

Standing at the rim of Mount Vesuvius, visitors peer down into the vast, smoke-tinged crater that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD. The walk along the crater's edge rewards with sweeping views over the Bay of Naples and the sprawling cityscape below. Sulfurous steam vents occasionally hiss from fumaroles along the inner walls, a vivid reminder that this is still an active volcano. The rim path circles a deep, ochre-and-grey bowl of fractured rock, its silence punctuated only by wind and the distant murmur of the city. The contrast between the raw, primordial geology underfoot and the glittering bay stretching to the horizon is visually arresting. Wildflowers cling to the upper slopes in spring, softening the volcanic terrain.
