Mount Marcy
New York's highest summit delivers sweeping Adirondack panoramas above the treeline — a classic Northeast wilderness peak.
About this spectacle
Mount Marcy is the highest peak in New York State, rising above the Adirondack High Peaks wilderness. From the broad, rocky summit, visitors are rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views across a sea of boreal forest, glacial lakes, and rolling ridgelines stretching to the horizon. The ascent winds through mixed hardwood and spruce-fir forest, crossing streams and open rock slabs before emerging onto the exposed alpine zone. Wind is nearly constant at the top, and weather can shift rapidly. In autumn, the surrounding forest erupts in vivid oranges and reds. Winter ascents in snow and ice transform the mountain into a remote, challenging wilderness experience. The summit itself is above treeline, offering an unobstructed panorama that rewards the long hike in every season.
