Mount Humphreys Arizona
Arizona's highest summit crowns a volcanic peak near Flagstaff, offering sweeping desert panoramas and rare alpine tundra found nowhere else in the Southwest.
About this spectacle
Mount Humphreys is the highest point in Arizona, rising above the Coconino Plateau near Flagstaff. Hikers ascend through dense ponderosa pine forests that give way to spruce, fir, and aspen groves shimmering gold in autumn, eventually reaching an exposed alpine tundra zone unique in the American Southwest. The summit ridge offers sweeping panoramic views across the painted desert, the Grand Canyon corridor to the north, and the high plateau stretching in every direction. Wind scours the upper slopes even in summer, and the contrast between the cool volcanic summit and the warm desert floor below creates a dramatic, layered visual experience. In winter, deep snowpack transforms the mountain into a stark white beacon visible from the distant desert. The volcanic origins of the San Francisco Peaks give the terrain a distinctive rugged character.
