Mount Danxia Unesco Global Geopark — China
China's most iconic red sandstone landscape, where towering crimson cliffs and river-carved pinnacles define the entire Danxia geomorphic category.
About this spectacle
Mount Danxia Geopark in Guangdong Province showcases one of China's most dramatic red-bed landscapes — weathered sandstone cliffs and pinnacles that glow a deep ochre and crimson in the low light of dawn and dusk. Visitors walk among towering rock columns, slot canyons, and cave formations carved over millennia by water and wind. The park sits along the Jinjiang River, and boat trips offer a low-angle view of sheer cliffs rising from the water's edge. The coloured strata shift in intensity through the day, peaking at sunrise and sunset when the iron-rich rock seems to catch fire. Subtropical vegetation cloaks the valleys between formations, with birdsong echoing through narrow gorges. The landscape gives its name to the entire 'Danxia landform' category recognised in Chinese geoscience.
