Mouflon Rut — Corsica Alta Rocca
Each October and November, the rugged granite peaks and chestnut forest of Corsica's Alta Rocca massif host the rut of the Corsican mouflon — the ancestor of all domestic sheep and one of Europe's oldest surviving wild ungulates — as males with massive curved horns compete for females on rocky ridges and mountain slopes in a display of head-clashing combat and elaborate courtship behaviour unique to this island population. The Corsican mouflon is found wild only in Corsica and Sardinia, with the Alta Rocca population of the Bavella massif being the most accessible, where the dramatic orange granite needles of the Aiguilles de Bavella provide a spectacular geological backdrop to wildlife encounters at close range on the GR20 trail. Males in peak rut develop a dark neck mane and the characteristic white saddle patch that intensifies in colour during the breeding season, and the sound of horn-clashing between rival males echoes off the granite faces of the valley. The October Alta Rocca combines mouflon rut, chestnut harvest festival, and the peak of autumn colour in the chestnut forests in a single visit. Corsican nuthatches, goshawks, and the endemic Corsican subspecies of red deer share the mountain forests.
About this spectacle
Each October and November, the granite peaks and chestnut forests of Corsica's Alta Rocca massif become an arena for the Corsican mouflon rut. At dawn, rival males with massive curved horns face off on rocky ridges above the Bavella valley, their head-clashing combat sending echoes off the towering orange granite needles of the Aiguilles de Bavella. Males develop a dark neck mane and a vivid white saddle patch as the season intensifies, and their guttural calls and the percussive crack of horn meeting horn carry far across the mountain silence. Visitors on the GR20 trail may encounter mouflon at surprisingly close range against a backdrop of dramatic rock spires and autumn-coloured chestnut forest. Corsican nuthatches call from the pines, and goshawks patrol the tree canopy below the ridgeline. The combination of endemic wildlife, geological drama, and the warm amber palette of autumn foliage makes this one of the most visually layered wildlife experiences in the western Mediterranean.
