Morsárfoss Waterfall — Iceland
Iceland's tallest waterfall plunges from the edge of Vatnajökull's ice cap into a raw glacial valley — a thunderous, remote spectacle of ice and water.
About this spectacle
Morsárfoss is Iceland's tallest waterfall, tumbling dramatically from the edge of the Vatnajökull ice cap into the glacial valley below. Visitors who make the journey — typically a multi-hour hike across the moraine-strewn landscape of Skaftafell — are rewarded with the thunderous roar of glacial meltwater crashing into the gorge far below. The surrounding terrain is raw and elemental: black volcanic rock, grey glacial silt, and the vivid white of the ice sheet above. Spray drifts across the valley on windy days, catching rainbow light in clear sunshine. The waterfall itself is best viewed from the valley floor or the slopes across the river, where its full height is visible against the towering ice. Because it lies within Vatnajökull National Park, the landscape is largely undisturbed, and the sense of scale — ice above, void below — is genuinely awe-inspiring.
