In the Anklamer Stadtbruch, a vast wetland and fen complex near the Baltic coast of northeastern Germany, the moor frog (Rana arvalis) stages one of Europe's most visually arresting amphibian displays each spring. For a brief window of just a few weeks, males transform from their usual brown into a vivid, electric blue as they compete for females in the shallow, reed-fringed pools. The air fills with a soft, bubbling chorus as hundreds of frogs cluster in dense aggregations. Visitors crouching at the water's edge at dawn witness a shimmering mosaic of blue against dark peat water, surrounded by the calls of marsh birds overhead. The spectacle is fleeting and deeply tied to temperature and water level, making each successful encounter feel rare and earned.
