Mons Klint Chalk Cliffs
Denmark's most spectacular coastal cliffs — dazzling white chalk faces plunging into the Baltic, crowned by ancient beech forest and rich in fossils.
About this spectacle
Møns Klint rises dramatically from the Baltic Sea along the southeastern coast of the Danish island of Møn, presenting gleaming white chalk cliffs that plunge up to around 120 metres into the turquoise waters below. The cliffs are studded with dark flint nodules and etched with ancient fossil beds, giving geology enthusiasts and curious walkers alike a tangible sense of deep time. Beech forest cloaks the clifftop, so visitors pass through dappled green canopy before emerging at vertiginous overlooks where seabirds wheel below and the sea stretches toward the horizon. The contrast of chalk-white against vivid blue water is striking in any season, and winter brings a spare, elemental quality as ice occasionally forms along the base. Fossil hunting on the pebbly beach at the cliff base is a popular activity, and the changing light at dawn and dusk intensifies the drama of the white face glowing against the sky.
