Molasses Reef — United States
One of Florida's most celebrated coral reefs, Molasses Reef dazzles snorkelers and divers with sea turtles, reef sharks, and vibrant coral gardens in warm, clear water.
About this spectacle
Molasses Reef sits within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, offering some of the most accessible coral reef diving and snorkeling in the continental United States. Visitors descend into warm, clear water where elkhorn and brain corals form towering structures alive with parrotfish, angelfish, and sergeant majors. Sea turtles cruise unhurried through the shallows, while moray eels peer from crevices below. The reef's shallow sections are ideal for snorkelers, while deeper ledges reward scuba divers with nurse sharks resting on sandy patches and occasional reef sharks patrolling the blue. The water glows with shifting light filtering through the surface, illuminating sponges in vivid orange and purple. Visibility can reach impressive depths on calm days, making the reef feel otherworldly. Boat traffic is managed through buoy moorings to protect the coral, giving the site a relatively unhurried atmosphere during weekdays.
