About this spectacle

Mekedaatu, meaning 'goat's leap' in Kannada, is a dramatic gorge on the Kaveri River in Karnataka where the river narrows sharply and plunges through a tight rock channel before cascading downstream. The sight of this powerful flow squeezing between two high rocky outcrops — barely wide enough for a goat to leap across, according to local lore — creates a visceral rush of sound and spray. The surrounding landscape is dry scrub forest, home to wildlife and framed by rugged terrain. Visitors stand at cliff edges watching the river churn into frothy white water below, the roar audible well before the gorge comes into view. Monsoon season transforms the flow into a roaring spectacle of brown, turbulent water, while post-monsoon months offer a cleaner blue-green cascade more suitable for extended viewing.
