Matterhorn
The Matterhorn's iconic pyramid dominates the Swiss Alps — a summit so perfectly formed it barely looks real.
About this spectacle
Standing at 4,478 metres, the Matterhorn's near-perfect pyramidal peak rises above the village of Zermatt with an almost architectural precision that stops visitors in their tracks. Its four sheer faces catch light differently through the day — blushing pink at alpenglow, blazing white under midday sun, and glowing amber at dusk. From the Gornergrat ridge or the meadows above Zermatt, photographers and hikers frame the peak against glaciers and wildflower-dotted alpine meadows. In winter the summit emerges above a sea of cloud, and in summer ibex occasionally pick their way across the rocky slopes below. The mountain's constant presence — visible from dozens of vantage points — means no single viewpoint feels definitive; every angle reveals a different character.
