Manatee Springs
Crystal-clear Florida springs where West Indian manatees gather by the dozens in winter — one of North America's most intimate large-mammal encounters.
About this spectacle
Manatee Springs State Park in Florida is a gathering point for West Indian manatees, particularly during cooler months when these gentle giants congregate in the warm, crystal-clear spring waters. Visitors stand at the boardwalk and peer into the turquoise 72°F spring run, watching massive grey shapes glide effortlessly just beneath the surface. The water is so clear that every barnacle and scar on a manatee's back is visible from above. During peak winter months, dozens of manatees may cluster near the spring head, surfacing rhythmically to breathe in slow, unhurried cycles. The surrounding cypress and hardwood forest adds a layered, atmospheric backdrop. Snorkelers and divers can share the water with manatees in designated areas, creating an intimate, face-to-face encounter unlike almost any other wildlife experience in North America.
