Lurgrotte Stalactite Cave
One of Austria's longest cave systems, Lurgrotte offers a guided underground journey through spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations in the Styrian karst.
About this spectacle
Lurgrotte is a dramatic stalactite cave system in Styria, Austria, near the town of Peggau. Visitors walk through illuminated underground passages where millennia of mineral-rich water have sculpted towering stalactites, wide stalagmites, and delicate cave formations in shades of white, amber, and grey. The air inside is cool and damp year-round, carrying the faint mineral scent of limestone. Underground streams echo through the chambers, adding an atmospheric soundtrack to the geological display. The cave maintains a constant low temperature regardless of the season outside, making it both a summer refuge and a year-round destination. Guided tours lead visitors through the main galleries, where dramatic lighting accentuates the scale of the formations and the cathedral-like proportions of the largest chambers.
