Lock and Dam 14 Bald Eagles
Dozens of bald eagles congregate below Lock and Dam 14 on the Mississippi River each winter, drawn by open water and easy fishing.
About this spectacle
Winter along the Mississippi River near Lock and Dam 14 draws bald eagles in remarkable numbers. As ice forms upstream, open water below the dam concentrates fish near the surface, creating an irresistible feeding ground. Visitors can watch eagles perch on ice floes and bare cottonwood branches, then plunge to snatch fish with powerful talons. The spectacle unfolds against a backdrop of wide river, frozen marshland, and industrial lock structures. On active mornings, dozens of eagles may be visible simultaneously, soaring, quarreling over catches, and calling with their distinctive high-pitched cries. Binoculars enhance the experience, though birds are often close enough to observe with the naked eye from river overlooks and road pullouts near the dam.
