Little Penguin Nightly Parade (Phillip Island) — Granite Island
Every evening, tiny little penguins waddle ashore at Granite Island — South Australia's own nightly penguin parade.
About this spectacle
Each evening at dusk, little penguins (the world's smallest penguin species) emerge from the Southern Ocean and waddle ashore at Granite Island, near Victor Harbor in South Australia. Visitors gather along designated viewing areas to watch small groups of these compact, blue-grey birds negotiate the rocky shoreline, their calls filling the cooling air as they make their way to burrows among the granite boulders. The experience is intimate and unhurried — penguins are indifferent to quiet observers, passing within metres. The sound of waves, the last glow of sunset, and the shuffling procession of birds create a quietly magical atmosphere. Rangers or guides typically accompany viewing to protect the colony and help visitors locate the birds in fading light.
