Little Bent-Wing Bat Emergence — Mount Etna Caves, Queensland

Each dusk from October to January, up to 100,000 little bent-wing bats stream out of the maternity caves at Mount Etna near Rockhampton in one of the most concentrated bat emergences in Australia: a churning black tornado of squeaking bats that fills the cave mouth for 30+ minutes before spiralling away against the twilight sky. This is one of only 7 known breeding sites in Australia for this vulnerable species; the roaring exodus of mothers returning from nightly insect hunts to nurse pups — before leaving again at dawn — makes for a haunting soundscape. Queensland Parks runs dusk viewing programs from the cave entrance.

About this spectacle

Each evening from October through January, as the Queensland sky shifts from orange to deep blue, up to 100,000 little bent-wing bats pour from the maternity caves at Mount Etna in a churning, spiralling column that fills the cave entrance for more than 30 minutes. The sound is extraordinary: a dense, high-pitched chorus of squeaking and wing-beats that reverberates off the limestone walls and surrounding scrub. Visitors standing at the designated viewing area watch the dark mass twist and billow against the twilight like living smoke, individual bats briefly silhouetted before being swallowed by the growing column. This is one of only seven known breeding sites in Australia for this vulnerable species, and the behaviour on display is the nightly departure of nursing mothers heading out to hunt insects before returning to their pups at dawn. Queensland Parks runs structured dusk viewing programs from the cave entrance, giving visitors an informed, front-row experience of one of the continent's most concentrated and emotionally striking wildlife spectacles.
