Lilienstein
415 m table mountain solitary above the Elbe in Saxon Switzerland NP.
About this spectacle
Lilienstein rises as a solitary sandstone table mountain above the meandering Elbe River in Saxon Switzerland National Park, its flat summit plateau commanding sweeping views over a dramatic landscape of forested ridges, rocky pinnacles, and the river valley below. Visitors climb trails through mixed forest before emerging onto open sandstone terraces where the wind carries the scent of pine resin and the calls of birds echo against ancient rock faces. The summit plateau rewards with a panoramic perspective unlike anything else in the region — a 360-degree sweep across the Elbe Sandstone Mountains stretching into the Czech Republic. The ascent itself winds past exposed sandstone cliffs, offering intimate encounters with the layered geology that defines this unique landscape. Cloud shadows race across the valley floor far below, and on clear days the view stretches for many kilometres in every direction.
