About this spectacle

Liechtensteinklamm is one of Austria's most dramatic gorges, carved by the rushing Großarler Ache through towering limestone walls that rise dramatically on either side. Visitors walk a series of wooden boardwalks and bridges bolted directly into the rock face, threading through passages so narrow that the sky above narrows to a sliver of light. The roar of the water is near-constant, the air cool and mist-laden even in summer heat. Mosses and ferns cling to every damp surface, dripping with spray. Deep inside the gorge, the walls soar to remarkable heights, creating an enclosed, cathedral-like atmosphere. At the inner terminus, a tall waterfall crashes into a churning basin, providing a spectacular endpoint to the walk. The experience is visceral — equal parts awe at geological scale and the intimacy of squeezing through ancient stone corridors.
