About this spectacle

Lemmenjoki is Finland's largest national park and home to one of the most pristine wilderness rivers in northern Europe. Flowing through ancient Sami lands above the Arctic Circle, the river cuts through a vast boreal and subarctic landscape of old-growth forests, tundra fells, and golden wetlands. In autumn, the birch and willow trees ignite in the spectacular Finnish 'ruska' — a riot of amber, crimson, and orange that reflects in the dark, slow-moving water. In winter, the river corridor freezes into a silent, snow-blanketed corridor beneath skies that occasionally erupt with aurora borealis. Summers bring the endless Arctic midnight sun, with the river glittering under perpetual golden light. Canoe journeys along the river reveal remote wilderness camping, gold-panning traditions still practiced in the area, and the deep quiet of one of Europe's last great undisturbed wild places. Brown bears and reindeer inhabit the surrounding terrain.
