Lehman Caves
A remarkably decorated marble cavern beneath Great Basin National Park, sheltering rare shield formations and dense speleothems in permanent darkness.
About this spectacle
Lehman Caves is a marble and limestone cavern tucked beneath the Snake Range in Great Basin National Park, Nevada. Inside, visitors walk through passages draped with rare shield formations, stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, and cave popcorn — a density of speleothems unusual even by world cave standards. The air stays at a constant cool temperature year-round, and the darkness, once lights are extinguished on guided tours, is absolute. Water seeps and drips echo softly through chambers with names like the Grand Palace. The cave is entirely tour-guided, meaning each visit feels curated rather than overwhelming. Above ground, the remote high-desert setting adds to the sense of discovery — this is one of the least light-polluted national park units in the lower 48, and the contrast between the exposed sagebrush valley and the intricate underground world below is part of the experience.
