Lechfall (Füssen)
Turquoise Lech river tumbling over a limestone step in Füssen.
About this spectacle
At the southern edge of Füssen in Bavaria, the Lech river narrows and drops over a natural limestone step known as the Lechfall, releasing a constant rush of turquoise-green water into a swirling pool below. The vivid colour comes from glacial meltwater carrying fine mineral particles, giving the flow an almost unreal luminosity even on overcast days. A viewing bridge spans the gorge directly above the fall, placing visitors just metres from the churning cascade. The surrounding rock walls are draped in mosses, and the sound of the water fills the small canyon completely. Below the fall, the river continues through the Königswinkel region toward the Forggensee reservoir. The site is compact and easily reached on foot from Füssen's old town, making it a quick but memorable stop. The contrast between the pale limestone, the dense forest rim, and that signature turquoise torrent is what visitors remember long after leaving.
