About this spectacle

Langfossen is one of Norway's most dramatic waterfalls, plunging in a series of cascades down a steep mountainside directly into the Åkrafjord. Visitors standing at the roadside or approaching by boat are met with the roar and mist of the falls, which appear to spring from the mountain heights and dissolve into the fjord below. The surrounding landscape is quintessential Norwegian westland — deep green slopes, grey rock walls, and the mirror of the fjord — creating a sense of wild, elemental scale. In spring and early summer, snowmelt swells the falls to their most spectacular volume, with white ribbons of water catching the low Nordic light. In winter, the lower sections may partially freeze, forming dramatic ice formations against dark rock. The site is accessible from the E134 road, meaning it can be experienced without significant hiking, though the full grandeur is best appreciated from the water.
