Lake Achensee Karwendel Cirque
Austria's deepest alpine lake, cradled inside a sheer Karwendel limestone cirque — turquoise water, towering walls, and crisp mountain air.
About this spectacle
Lake Achensee sits in a dramatic cirque carved into the Karwendel range in Tyrol, Austria. Visitors arrive to find a long, narrow alpine lake flanked by steep limestone walls that plunge directly into deep turquoise water. The surrounding peaks rise sharply, creating a sense of enclosure that intensifies the visual drama. In summer, the lake's surface mirrors the cliffs and sky with remarkable clarity; in autumn, the hillside forests blaze with colour against the grey rock. A gentle breeze frequently stirs the surface, breaking the reflection into shifting light. The shoreline towns of Pertisau and Maurach offer access points, and a historic rack railway, the Achenseebahn, connects the lake to the valley. Birdlife includes cormorants and various ducks on the water. Whether seen from the water by paddle or from the lakeshore promenade, the scale of the Karwendel walls above makes the experience genuinely impressive.
