Lagunas de Ruidera
A chain of fifteen emerald lagoons cascading across the dry La Mancha plateau, linked by travertine dams and tumbling waterfalls.
About this spectacle
The Lagunas de Ruidera form a chain of fifteen interconnected lakes and lagoons strung along the Guadiana Alto valley in the La Mancha region of central Spain. Visitors walk or cycle between turquoise and emerald pools separated by natural travertine dams and cascading waterfalls, the water shifting colour from deep jade to pale aquamarine depending on the angle of light. Reeds and riparian woodland line the shores, harbouring herons, kingfishers, and red-crested pochards. On still mornings the mirrored surface reflects limestone cliffs and scrub oak, creating compositions of unexpected elegance. Summer draws swimmers and kayakers to the clearer upper lagoons, while spring delivers wildflower meadows and peak birdlife. The surrounding plateau is arid steppe, making the sudden abundance of water and green vegetation feel almost implausible—a genuinely startling oasis in the heart of Castilla-La Mancha.
