Lac d'Aiguebelette
One of France's clearest and most colourful natural lakes, where motor boats are banned and the turquoise water mirrors forested Alpine foothills.
About this spectacle
Lac d'Aiguebelette is a small, remarkably clear natural lake nestled in the Chartreuse pre-Alps of Savoie, France. Its waters shift between vivid turquoise and deep emerald depending on the light, framed by forested hillsides that reflect perfectly on calm mornings. The lake is celebrated for its exceptional water clarity — motorised boats are largely banned, keeping the surface serene and the air quiet. Visitors can watch dragonflies skim the shallows, spot coots and grebes among the reeds, and enjoy the soft lapping of non-motorised craft. The surrounding hills offer viewpoints that reveal the lake's full jewel-like colour. In summer the shallow southern end warms quickly, drawing swimmers. At dawn or dusk the stillness is profound, with mist sometimes lying low across the water and the Alps visible on clear days to the east.
