About this spectacle

Kütralkura UNESCO Global Geopark spreads across the Araucanía Region of southern Chile, a landscape shaped by the restless volcanic and glacial forces of the Andes. Visitors encounter dramatic calderas, lava fields, crater lakes, and ancient pehuén (monkey puzzle) forests that signal just how geologically alive this terrain remains. The geopark takes its name from the Mapudungun words for 'stone of fire', a nod to the volcanic legacy visible underfoot and on the horizon. Towering volcanoes such as Tolhuaca, Lonquimay, and Sierra Nevada anchor the scenery, while rivers carve gorges through dark basaltic rock. The air carries the clean, resinous scent of the araucaria forest, and on clear days the snowcapped summits dominate every vista. Wildlife including condors, pumas, and native Valdivian temperate rainforest species inhabit the terrain. The geopark's geological story spans millions of years of eruption and glaciation, making each outcrop a chapter in a vast, still-unfinished narrative.
