Kuhstall

About this spectacle

Kuhstall is a massive natural sandstone arch carved by millennia of erosion in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Saxon Switzerland. Visitors pass through the arch itself — a soaring gateway of warm ochre rock — and emerge onto a viewpoint platform where forested sandstone ridges stretch across the horizon. The rock surfaces are textured with iron-stained grooves and rounded hollows, and mosses cling to shaded alcoves within the arch. The surrounding beech and pine forest muffles outside noise, leaving only birdsong and the creak of branches. As the second-largest natural arch in the range, it commands attention from every angle: viewed from below, the span overhead frames a window of sky; from inside, it frames the tree-canopied valley. Autumn colours and morning mist rolling through the gorges below add particular atmosphere. The walk to the arch follows well-marked trail through quintessential Saxon Switzerland scenery.
