Koko Crater Volcanic Crater — United States
A commanding tuff cone on Oahu's southeastern coast, offering a brutal hike up old railway ties and panoramic Pacific views from the crater rim.
About this spectacle
Koko Crater is a dramatic tuff cone rising sharply from the southeastern tip of Oahu, its rust-red and ochre walls enclosing a wide, bowl-shaped interior. Visitors who make the climb up the old military tramway—a steep series of weathered wooden railway ties clinging to the crater's outer ridge—are rewarded with sweeping panoramas of Hanauma Bay, the Pacific horizon, and the Koolau Range. The volcanic geology is stark and immediate: loose cinder underfoot, exposed basaltic layers in the crater walls, and almost no shade. Inside the crater floor, a botanical garden occupies the sheltered depression, offering a quieter counterpoint to the punishing ascent. On clear mornings the light catches the crater's angular ridgelines dramatically, and the silence at the rim is broken only by wind and the distant surf. The sense of standing inside an extinct volcanic vent—however eroded—is visceral and distinctly Hawaiian.
