Knivskjellodden
The true northernmost tip of mainland Europe offers near-total darkness and stunning aurora displays during polar night, plus the legendary midnight sun in summer.
About this spectacle
Knivskjellodden is the northernmost point of mainland Europe, a remote headland on the island of Magerøya in Arctic Norway. Visitors who make the roughly 18-kilometre round-trip hike are rewarded with sweeping views over the Barents Sea and, during the polar night season, dramatic displays of the northern lights dancing across an ink-black sky virtually free of light pollution. In summer the midnight sun hangs impossibly low on the horizon, bathing the tundra in golden light around the clock. The landscape is raw and elemental — sparse Arctic vegetation, rocky terrain, and the constant sound of wind and distant surf. Stars on clear autumn and winter nights are staggering in their clarity at this latitude, making this a genuine dark-sky destination for much of the year.
