Kivach waterfall — Russia
One of Europe's largest plain waterfalls, Kivach plunges through Karelia's ancient boreal forest in a protected nature reserve.
About this spectacle
Kivach is one of the largest plain waterfalls in Europe, located within the Kivach Nature Reserve in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. Visitors encounter the Suna River tumbling over a series of basalt ledges in a forested boreal landscape of pine, spruce, and birch. The roar of the water is audible well before the falls come into view, and a fine mist drifts across the viewing area. In summer, the surrounding taiga is lush and green; in winter, ice formations transform the cascade into a sculptural freeze of hanging ice and snow-draped rocks. Autumn brings golden and amber foliage that frames the dark river water dramatically. The falls are modest in height but powerful in volume, and the protected reserve means wildlife — including elk and birds typical of the northern forest — may be encountered along the short trails near the viewing platform.
