Kerið Volcanic Crater — Iceland
Iceland's most colourful volcanic crater — a vivid teal lake ringed by rust-red scoria walls you can walk around in under an hour.
About this spectacle
Kerið is a striking volcanic crater in Iceland's Southern Region, formed roughly 3,000 years ago when a magma chamber collapsed rather than erupted. Visitors walk down into and around the rim of a vivid green-blue crater lake, its still waters reflecting the deep red and ochre volcanic rock walls that plunge steeply on all sides. The contrast between the rust-coloured scoria, the electric teal of the lake, and Iceland's wide sky creates an almost surreal palette. The crater bowl is surprisingly intimate — small enough to feel enclosed yet dramatic enough to stop you in your tracks. A well-maintained path circles the entire rim and descends to the lakeside. The site is compact and visits are typically brisk, but the photographic rewards are immediate and striking at any season, including winter when snow dusts the red slopes.
