Kelimutu Coloured Crater Lakes — Flores Indonesia

Kelimutu volcano on Flores Island hosts three crater lakes that change colour independently and unpredictably between deep turquoise, emerald green, brown, black, and brick red — a consequence of fluctuating volcanic gas emissions chemically altering the dissolved minerals in each lake at different rates. No two visits find the same colours, and over decades the lakes have cycled through sequences that defy simple prediction. The Ata Polo and Nuwa Muri lakes sit separated only by a thin ridge between two craters, occasionally matching and occasionally contrasting dramatically. The sunrise ritual at 5am, ascending 1,600 metres on foot with local guides who consider the lakes sacred ancestors' resting places, and watching the colours emerge from pre-dawn grey into full illumination, is one of the most quietly extraordinary natural experiences in Indonesia.

About this spectacle

At 5am, visitors begin the final ascent to Kelimutu's summit in darkness, arriving at the rim as the first grey light begins to separate sky from crater. Slowly, three distinct lakes reveal themselves — each sitting in its own volcanic bowl, each an entirely different colour. Some mornings the Ata Polo lake glows a deep brick red against a neighbouring turquoise. Other mornings both craters share the same ominous black, while the third burns emerald. No guidebook can predict what you will find. The colours shift over weeks and months as fluctuating volcanic gas emissions alter the chemical balance of dissolved minerals differently in each lake. The experience is hushed — cold pre-dawn air, the smell of sulphur drifting up from the crater walls, and the slow realisation that the landscape you are watching is alive and genuinely unpredictable. The thin ridge dividing two of the lakes adds a sense of precariousness and proximity to the volcanic forces at work below. It is a spectacle that rewards patience and silence.
