Keila Waterfall — Estonia
Estonia's widest waterfall — a sweeping limestone curtain on the Keila River that dazzles in spring flood and turns to ice sculpture in winter.
About this spectacle
Keila Waterfall is one of Estonia's most striking natural features — a wide, horseshoe-shaped curtain of water dropping over a limestone ledge into the Keila River below. The rush of water creates a constant mist that cools the air and nourishes lush green mosses along the rocky banks. In spring, snowmelt swells the falls to their most dramatic volume, the roar audible well before the cascade comes into view. Winter transforms the scene entirely, when ice formations cling to the limestone face and partial freezing creates ethereal blue-white sculptures. The surrounding riparian forest turns vivid gold in autumn. The site sits close to the town of Keila, making it an easily reached escape where the sound of tumbling water and the sight of a broad, naturally-eroded falls reward visitors in every season.
