Kegon Falls — Japan
One of Japan's iconic waterfalls — Kegon Falls plunges from Lake Chuzenji into a misty gorge, stunning in every season from summer rainbows to winter ice.
About this spectacle
Kegon Falls is one of Japan's most celebrated waterfalls, plunging dramatically from Lake Chuzenji in the highlands of Nikko National Park. Visitors witness a powerful main cascade tumbling roughly 97 metres into a churning basin, flanked by smaller subsidiary falls threading through the surrounding cliffs. In warmer months, mist fills the gorge and a rainbow often arcs across the falls in morning light. An observation deck at the top offers a broad panoramic view, while a paid elevator descends to a lower platform that places visitors directly before the thundering water — close enough to feel the spray and hear the deep roar reverberating off the rocky walls. In winter, the falls partially freeze into dramatic curtains of blue-white ice, transforming the scene entirely. Autumn brings vivid foliage that frames the cascade in reds and golds, making it one of the most photographed natural scenes in Kanto. The surrounding Nikko area adds forests and mountain scenery to the experience.
