Jasper Pulaski Sandhill Cranes
Every autumn, tens of thousands of sandhill cranes stage at Jasper-Pulaski in Indiana — one of the Midwest's greatest wildlife gatherings.
About this spectacle
Each autumn, tens of thousands of sandhill cranes converge on the fields and wetlands around Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in northwest Indiana, creating one of North America's most dramatic wildlife spectacles. At dawn and dusk, massive flocks lift off or descend in spiraling columns, filling the air with their haunting, rattling calls. Visitors gather at designated viewing areas to watch the birds feed in harvested cornfields during the day, then stream toward roost sites as the sun drops. The sheer volume of birds — sometimes exceeding 30,000 — creates a sensory experience that is simultaneously overwhelming and deeply moving. The surrounding flat agricultural landscape channels attention entirely onto the sky and the birds. November brings the largest concentrations before the cranes continue south toward their wintering grounds.
