About this spectacle

The Han River Estuary near Janghang is one of the most significant stopover points on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, where vast tidal mudflats and reed beds attract tens of thousands of migratory waterbirds during spring and autumn passages. Visitors scanning the estuary at dawn may witness dense flocks of dunlin, black-tailed godwit, spoonbills, and endangered cranes wheeling over silvery tidal channels. The landscape is flat and expansive, offering wide-open sky panoramas that reward patience and binoculars. In autumn, departing shorebirds gather in tight roosts on sandbars while raptors patrol the reed margins. The estuary's liminal quality — where freshwater meets tidal influence in a politically sensitive zone near the DMZ — lends the spectacle an otherworldly stillness broken only by the calls of migrating birds and the rustle of wind through tall grasses.
