About this spectacle

The Cazane Gorge, part of the Iron Gates on the Danube between Romania and Serbia, is one of Europe's most dramatic river canyons. Towering limestone cliffs rise hundreds of metres from the water's edge, their faces streaked with geological strata laid down over millennia. Travelling through by boat, visitors experience a profound sense of scale as the gorge narrows and the sky shrinks to a ribbon of blue above. The rock walls reflect in the river's dark green water, and the silence of the chasm is broken only by birdsong and the gentle wash of the current. Falcons and other raptors circle the clifftops, while scrub vegetation clings to ledges in vivid greens and golds depending on the season. The sheer vertical walls, carved by the Danube over countless ages, make this one of the most visually striking passages on any European river.
