Inner Niger Delta Wetland — Mali
One of Africa's largest inland deltas, the Inner Niger Delta floods each year to create a vast, bird-filled wetland wilderness in the heart of the Sahel.
About this spectacle
The Inner Niger Delta is one of Africa's great inland flood systems, where the Niger River fans out across the Sahel into a vast mosaic of channels, lakes, and floodplains covering thousands of square kilometres. As seasonal floodwaters rise each year, the landscape transforms from dry savanna into shimmering wetlands teeming with life. Visitors witness vast flocks of migratory waterbirds — herons, egrets, storks, and ducks — rising in dense clouds above papyrus beds and open water. Fishermen in narrow pirogues navigate labyrinthine channels, their nets arcing silver in the low light. The air carries the sounds of splashing, calling birds, and the slap of water on wooden hulls. As waters recede, the exposed floodplains burst into green pasture, drawing Fulani cattle herders in a timeless transhumance. The shifting moods of water, sky, and wildlife across the flood cycle create a constantly evolving spectacle of wetland life on an epic scale.
