Iberian lynx — Sierra de Andújar
One of the last strongholds of the Iberian lynx, Earth's most endangered wild cat — a rare chance to see this ghost of the Mediterranean scrubland in the wild.
About this spectacle
Sierra de Andújar Natural Park in Andalusia offers one of the world's rarest wildlife encounters: a genuine sighting of the Iberian lynx, the most endangered wild cat in Europe. Visitors scan the scrubby Mediterranean hillsides — dense maquis of cistus, rosemary and wild olive — at dawn and dusk, when lynx move between territories in search of rabbit prey. The landscape itself is dramatic: rugged granite ridges dropping into oak-dotted valleys, threaded by the Jándula River. A sighting is never guaranteed, but when a tawny, tufted-eared cat slips across a firebreak or pauses in the morning light, it is unforgettable. Guided wildlife hides and slow drives along unpaved tracks are the standard approach. The surrounding park also hosts black storks, Spanish imperial eagles, and red deer, ensuring the experience rewards patience even on lynx-quiet days.
