Hwanseon Cave
A dramatic limestone cave system in South Korea's Gangwon mountains, where millennia of dripping water have sculpted a world of stalactites, stalagmites, and glittering flowstone.
About this spectacle
Hwanseon Cave is one of South Korea's significant limestone cave systems, located in the mountainous Gangwon region. Visitors descend into a world of sculpted carbonate rock, where stalactites hang from vaulted ceilings and stalagmites rise from the cave floor, shaped by millennia of slow mineral deposition. The air inside is cool and damp year-round, carrying the mineral scent of ancient stone. Illuminated pathways reveal dramatic formations — curtains of flowstone, rimstone pools, and columns where opposing formations have merged. The relative silence is broken only by the drip of water echoing through chambers. Because the cave maintains a stable internal temperature regardless of season, it draws visitors in both summer heat and winter cold. The surrounding Taebaek mountain landscape adds a scenic approach to the underground experience.
